Can I Buy the Abortion Pill Online?

The internet makes almost anything available within days, including the abortion pill. But before clicking “order,” an important question to ask is: Is this actually safe?

Availability and safety are not the same thing. When it comes to your health, there are important factors to consider before ordering anything from the internet.

At Ascend Women’s Center, we offer free and confidential pregnancy services in a compassionate, welcoming environment. Before making a decision, schedule an appointment to talk through your options with our caring team.

What Is the Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill involves taking two drugs within a short timeframe. Mifepristone is taken first to stop the pregnancy from progressing by blocking progesterone. Misoprostol is taken later, one to two days afterward, to cause cramping and bleeding as the uterus expels the pregnancy and related tissue.

This method is approved by the FDA for use through 10 weeks of pregnancy. After that stage, the risk of complications such as heavy bleeding, infection, or incomplete abortion increases, requiring immediate medical care from a healthcare provider.

Because timing, dosage, and individual health factors vary, medical oversight is part of standard care before using abortion drugs.

What Are the Risks of Buying It Online?

Ordering the abortion pill online may seem convenient, but it can put your health at risk. When abortion drugs are purchased from unknown sources, there is no reliable way to verify whether they meet U.S. safety and quality standards, and some distributors may not provide complete or accurate instructions, leaving you to assume that risk.

Some concerns include:

  • Unverified sources. The FDA advises against purchasing abortion drugs from unregulated online sellers. Pills obtained from overseas or unknown distributors may vary in dosage, packaging, or instructions.
  • No in-person medical evaluation. Without a licensed medical professional reviewing your health history or confirming pregnancy details, certain risk factors may go unnoticed.
  • Limited real-time support. If symptoms become intense, it can be hard to know what’s normal and what requires urgent care, especially without a provider you can reach quickly.

The FDA also provides guidance to help identify potentially unsafe online pharmacy practices.

Get the Full Picture First

Before making a pregnancy decision, it’s important to have accurate information about your pregnancy. Ascend Women’s Center provides free and confidential medical-grade pregnancy testing administered by a registered nurse (RN), along with limited OB ultrasounds.

An ultrasound is a critical part of learning how far along the pregnancy is, confirming the location of the pregnancy, and showing whether the pregnancy is developing. Having this information can help you consider your options with a better sense of where things stand.

Per our medical policy, we are not able to perform ultrasounds on patients who have taken the abortion pill. If you have already taken it and are experiencing symptoms, we would refer you to an emergency room or medical provider.
