Is Abortion or Adoption Right for Me?
If you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy and parenting doesn’t feel like the right fit, you may be considering your other two options: abortion or adoption. These choices are very different, and each carries emotional, physical, and personal implications. Taking time to learn more about each can help you make an informed decision.

Abortion: An Overview
Abortion is intentionally ending a viable pregnancy, and there are two main types: medical abortion and surgical abortion.
Medical abortion, which uses prescription drugs and is FDA-approved through 10 weeks of pregnancy.
Surgical abortion, which takes place in a hospital or clinic using medical instruments and suction. This abortion type is often performed later in the first trimester or beyond.
However, elective abortion is currently permitted in North Carolina during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, and only beyond in certain cases. Medical abortion is likely more common in our state for this reason.
Both methods involve physical side effects and risks, and emotional responses can vary from relief to regret.
Before proceeding, it’s essential to receive an ultrasound to confirm your gestational age, check for a heartbeat, and rule out conditions like miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, which require different care.
Adoption: What It Involves
Adoption involves carrying your pregnancy to term, giving birth, and placing your child with a family you choose. Today, adoption is more flexible than ever. You can select from open, semi-open, or closed adoption plans, depending on how much future contact you want with the adoptive family and child.
Adoption is typically at no cost to the birth mother. Medical expenses not covered by insurance, along with some living and legal costs, are often covered by the adoptive family. Many adoption agencies also provide emotional and material support throughout the process and beyond.
Comparing Abortion and Adoption
Abortion ends the pregnancy without carrying to term, but it does require a medical procedure and, in many cases, out-of-pocket expenses. Emotional responses can vary widely and may take time to process.
Adoption, on the other hand, involves carrying a pregnancy to term but doesn’t end in parenting. It requires more planning and decisions, but it also offers the opportunity to remain connected to the child if desired. For some women, adoption brings peace of mind knowing their child is cared for and loved.
