Adoption is an option that’s full of choices. If you’re considering adoption, it’s important to know what options are available to help you make an informed decision.
Adoption Options
There are three main types of adoption plans, and each comes with different options, so you choose the details that are important to you.
- Open Adoption: As the name suggests, this plan is the most open. In an open adoption, you have the ability to choose and meet the adoptive family before making a final decision. You also get to choose how often you communicate with the adoptive family and child and how the communication takes place (in-person, online, etc.).
- Semi-Open Adoption: This is similar to open adoption, but all communication is mediated by a third party (usually the adoption agency). For example, if you decide you want to write to the adoptive family or receive letters from them, the third party will deliver these messages.
- Closed Adoption. Closed adoption is the most limited adoption plan. With closed adoption, you won’t know anything about the adoptive family or child, and they won’t know anything about you (except for limited medical information).
Is Adoption Right For Me?
Adoption can be an emotionally complex choice, which is why it’s critical to speak with an adoption counselor if you’re considering this option. An adoption counselor will walk you through what this choice might look like in your life and make sure you understand everything that’s involved.
When thinking about whether adoption is the right choice for your situation, it can help to ask yourself the following questions:
- What questions do I still have about adoption?
- Why am I considering adoption over my other options?
- Which adoption plan am I most interested in and why?
