What Is Ectopic Pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy is a non-viable pregnancy that happens to some women early in pregnancy. It happens when the fertilized egg implants in another location, like the cervix, an ovary, or a fallopian tube.

An ectopic pregnancy is not a healthy, viable pregnancy and can be life-threatening if not treated right away.

Confirm your pregnancy details and any possible concerns, such as ectopic pregnancy, with a no-cost limited OB ultrasound at Ascend Women’s Center. Contact us today to schedule an appointment to get started.

How Does Ectopic Pregnancy Occur?

An ectopic pregnancy most often occurs in a fallopian tube, which carries eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. Sometimes, an ectopic pregnancy can happen in other areas of the body, such as the ovary, abdominal cavity, or the lower part of the uterus (cervix).

With ectopic pregnancy, the fertilized egg can’t survive and could cause life-threatening bleeding if left untreated. It’s vital to seek medical care right away if you suspect this type of complication.

Symptoms of Ectopic Pregnancy

There are some early symptoms of ectopic pregnancy to look out for. These include light vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain. You could also have shoulder pain or an urge to have a bowel movement. Your specific symptoms may vary based on your unique situation.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience include extreme lightheadedness, fainting, and shock. Other symptoms include:

  • Severe abdominal or pelvic pain accompanied by vaginal bleeding
  • Extreme lightheadedness or fainting
  • Shoulder pain
  • Shock

Why Ultrasounds Matter in Pregnancy

An ultrasound is a must when confirming your pregnancy details, as it can alert you to a possible ectopic pregnancy and other complications. An ultrasound confirms if you have a viable pregnancy, which means your pregnancy has a heartbeat and is progressing.
